The Asian Hockey Federation was formed during the Asian Games of 1958 in Tokyo when hockey was first played in the Games. The first 5 member countries were India, Japan, Korea, Malaysian and Pakistan.

For a while the Asian Games hockey competition remained the only international event controlled by the Federation. In 1971 hockey was introduced in the South East Asian Games and this became the second international event controlled by the Federation.

In 1976, the International Hockey Federation proposed the holding of the Junior World Cup in 1979. There became a need to hold a qualifying event for Asia and as such in 1977, the Asian Hockey Federation held a tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Then in 1982 the 1st Men’s Asia Cup was held in Karachi, Pakistan and this was the first uniquely AHF competition.

The membership of the Federation has now grown to 31 National Hockey Associations, and it now controls hockey in 20 separate regional and continental events.
